IVF Canada
Approximately 20% of Canadian couples experience difficulty in their attempts to
achieve pregnancy. There are many and various factors that may contribute to
infertility and can be attributed to either the male or female partner, or both.
An infertility work-up by a medical fertility specialist is necessary to
determine the specific cause and subsequent treatment.
One or both fallopian tubes, which carry the ovum from the ovary to the uterus,
is obstructed and/or does not function properly preventing the sperm and egg
from meeting. Can also include women who have undergone a tubal ligation. Tubal
ligation or patients with only one blocked fallopian tube do not qualify for
funding under OHIP.
Cervical problems (cervical mucus prevents sperm from passing through the
cervix; mucus is hostile to sperm making sperm survival very low); combined
male/female
problems; uterine fibroids (non-malignant tumours located within the uterus);
female age (fertility decreases drastically after the age of 38).

Pacific Centre For Reproductive Medicine
Fortunately for couples struggling with infertility, there are several
innovative and effective treatments to increase fertility. Over the past 30
years, reproductive specialists have made great strides in successfully
overcoming the diseases and abnormalities that cause infertility. Assisted
Reproductive Technology (ART) is responsible for thousands of babies being born
to previously infertile couples around the globe.
IVF is a complex procedure. That is why prior to undergoing IVF treatment, PCRM
patients have an IVF orientation with their physician who will fully explain the
IVF process, including pre-IVF investigations and processes. All IVF patients
will receive instructions on the proper timing and administration of the
fertility medications involved in the IVF treatment cycle.
Couples who become candidates for in vitro fertilization (IVF) often do so if
all other treatments, such as IUI have failed. However, sometimes a precondition
such as tubal disease, advanced age, or severe male factor infertility makes IVF
treatment the only option available.
