Zouves Fertility Center
The cycle commences with stimulation of the ovaries using injectable fertility
medications and thereafter monitoring is performed through blood tests and
ultrasounds. When the follicles reach an optimum size, an injection of hCG is
given to trigger the final maturation of eggs.
The eggs are retrieved through the vagina with ultrasound using a light
anesthetic. Once the eggs are identified they are fertilized in the laboratory
either through mixing when the sperm parameters and the eggs are healthy all
through intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) when there is either a sperm
or an egg factor.

Infertility treatment is rapidly evolving, nowhere more so than here in the
Stanford REI Center. Although ART procedures generally follow the steps
described below, no single approach is exactly the same for each person. Your
health care team will discuss every option and every step with you in great
detail. They will also discuss current success rates as may apply to your
specific situation.

Infertility, IUI, PGD, and Endometriosis
IVF is a procedure involving the stimulation of multiple ovarian follicles using
gonadotropins. These follicles are then retrieved at the appropriate time. After
fertilization in the lab, the subsequent embryos are transferred into the uterus
where implantation can occur. This process bypasses the fallopian tubes and
increases fertilization rates when there are problems with low sperm counts.

Laurel Fertility Care - San Francisco, CA - Home
Miscarriages or spontaneous pregnancy losses occur as a normal part of
reproduction. Our ability to detect very early pregnancies by high resolution
ultrasound and hormone (beta-hCG) levels have increased the awareness of these
losses. Sporadic pregnancy loss occurs in about 15% of all clinically recognized
pregnancies in women under age 35. The frequency of spontaneous pregnancy loss
increases with maternal age, largely because of the increase in chromosomal
abnormalities within the eggs.
