What is miscarriage?

Miscarriage is the worst thing that can happen in the life of a woman.

Unfortunately there are millions of women who get affected by this problem. Miscarriage means loss of pregnancy. 10 to 12% of the pregnancy cases end up as miscarriage. Mostly miscarriage occurs in the first twelve weeks.

There are many symptoms of miscarriage. One most common symptom is when blood and tissues fragment starts coming out of your vagina. Also if you are having problem of cramps, pelvic or pain, it could mean that you have lost your child. When the sign of pregnancy stops all of a sudden you should consult the doctor as soon as possible. In some situations ultra sound also detects the loss of pregnancy.

Most common sign of miscarriage is bleeding. Though there are many reasons responsible for miscarriage, but the main factor occurs because of low quality combination of the genetic material during fertilization. Natural reasons are also responsible for miscarriage like when mother is not able to carry pregnancy. This can be due to deficiency of hormones or immunity. Quality of the egg is also a reason. If a woman is above 35 years of age and is involved in habit of smoking or consuming alcohol, chances of miscarriage increase. If you are getting pregnant multiple times and that too at short intervals, you can also face the problem of miscarriages.

Many people believe that taking a contraceptive pill before getting pregnant reduces the risk of miscarriage. Sex and stress are not the reasons of miscarriage though many people still do not believe in this.

If you realize that the miscarriage has started, you are required to do few things to save the embryo. If there is a slight spot on your underwear, you should consult the doctor immediately. This step is very important though many times it sounds useless. If you notice that your cervix is closed, then don’t take tension, it is an indication of miscarriage but if you are able to take right steps you can save the baby.

Ultrasound is conducted to check the baby’s heartbeat. If you just became pregnant it is not quite possible to detect the heartbeat of baby. Heart beat cannot be detected prior 8 weeks. Nothing much can be done in that case. In this type of case patient is left with two choices, natural discharge or discharge by the doctors by using tools and medications. Doctors provide D and C (dilatation and curettage) to the patient. By this procedure, tissue is removed through suction from the uterus under general anesthesia.

Vaginal bleeding stops in around 10 days. After that you will start getting your normal periods in the time of 4 to 6 weeks. It is always advised that you should at least wait for a cycle to get over before trying to conceive a child again.

Miscarriage is also possible two or three times. If you are in such a category, you are required to go to the clinic and consult the doctor to find the cause and get it treated.
