The medical definition of infertility is the inability to achieve a successful pregnancy after one year of well-timed, unprotected sex. It is said that no woman is complete without bearing a child.

However, technological advancement in science and medicines has proven infertility to be a myth. An infertile couple can have their baby with the help of In Vitro Fertilization (IVF). It is a reproductive technology in which a female egg is joined with a male sperm cell in a test tube (in vitro). The first IVF baby, Louise Joy Brown, was born in England in 1978. Factors that give rise to infertility are: Age: Female age is the most important factor in getting pregnant. Young couples nowadays tend to overlook this factor intentionally or unintentionally. People are giving priority to their careers than settling down in life. As a result they get married at a late age.

Too much work: Career oriented couples are generally exhausted due to long travels and late sittings in the office. They simply stay inactive due to over exertion. This gives rise to sexual problems. Negligence or lack of sexual knowledge: Some males or even females are confused and do not know how to go about during a sexual intercourse. This generally happens when either of the two or even both do not have much knowledge about it. Relying on destiny or time: Some females do not focus on conceiving during their reproductive span. Rather they waste their valuable reproductive years by just praying to god or waiting for time to come.

The IVF process starts with certain blood tests to check the woman’s womb, ovaries and hormone level and an ultrasound scan to check the lining of uterus and ovaries. A detailed sperm count is also carried out. Certain fertility injections and drugs are used to stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple eggs. The eggs are then recovered, and placed together with sperm in a special nutrient rich tube to achieve fertilization.

After fertilization, one to three embryos are either transferred inside the woman’s uterus to begin pregnancy or kept frozen for future use. The whole process is monitored by the Doctor himself to check the development of follicles and lining of the uterus.  The IVF procedure gives approximately 30 - 35% pregnancy rate per cycle. Nearly 90% of the infertile couples can be successfully treated through IVF. This process is also made available in some cheap hospitals so that it suits all pockets without compromising on quality and results.

Infertility is deeply stressful and often touches every aspect of life. It causes isolation in the life of married couples. Women can achieve fertilization, even after their reproductive age, through In Vitro Fertilization. The IVF treatment is offered at many hospitals as an alternate solution to infertility. IVF procedure aims to replace stress and pains with a hand of friendship and support. Therefore, make sure to see a doctor if you fail to conceive even after having regular, unprotected sex for more than six months or a year.

Infertility issues are very distressing for married couples. If a woman is unable to conceive pregnancy after atleast 1 year of unprotected sexual intercourse then this condition refers to infertility. Millions of people are affected with infertility. The causes may vary depending on your health conditions. Improvements in medical science have made it possible for the introduction of In Vitro Fertilization. It is the safest, non surgical and globally recognized infertility treatment. IVF is one of the supportive reproductive techniques where an infertile couple can be able to achieve pregnancy carefully and successfully.

IVF involves fertilizing an ovum in a laboratory dish and then transferring the embryo to a woman’s uterus. The word ‘test tube baby’ is generally used to refer to the children born with this technique. Approximately 90% of cases of infertility are treated effectively through IVF. For a long time in the UK there was no government policy on what should be the cost of IVF treatment to be offered for couples seeking infertility treatment. What was available depended on where you lived; a situation which was sometimes referred to as "babies by postcode".

However, in such cases there are long waiting lists for fertility treatment. This may get worse if you wait for so many years. You may be able to get treatment more quickly if you pay for IVF privately, but there can still be long waiting lists for some treatments, such as egg donation. One should not forget to ask in advance about the full cost of each IVF cycle. Also remember about the hidden costs like, taking time off work and travel expenses, if you may need to make many journeys to the clinic. There are many websites that provide free information on expenses related to IVF to all its users.

Sometimes, trying to compare prices with other IVF centers may be frustrating. The IVF treatment is much less expensive in India, as compared to the US and UK. This doesn’t mean that there are any compromises on the quality. This is because doctors charge much less per IVF cycle. This treatment is very cost-effective in India, and quite a few patients do fly down to India for treatment. In fact, reproductive tourism has become very popular as about half the patients come to India from the US and UK.
