IUI-what is it?

IUI (intrauterine insemination) is a procedure to gain fertility that is performed by a RE or OB/GYN and is for those women with PCOS and also for the women having some other issues related to fertility after they have gone through heavy medication cycle.

.Medication cycle includes Clomid/Femara and inje-ctable medications. Various tests are performed before IUI. Tests are performed to see that the patient has atleast one mature follicle. Normally the intrauterine insemination is used for the patients who have mature follicles but still are not able to get pregnant.

Before starting the procedure of IUI, husband is required to come to the clinic and provide sample of semen. After this the sample is taken to the lab for testing. Semen is washed through a washing protocol. When it gets washed, it is taken to the examination room. In exam rooms doctors start inserting a speculum. By using a lubricant which is sperm friendly, a very thin and flexible catheter is inserted into the cervix by the doctors. Washing of sperm creates a better chance of survival and fertilization of the husband’s sperm. Washing of the sperm is done to separate the sperm cells from the semen, so that the slow or dead sperms can be removed. Usuallyintrauterine insemination procedure is done after 24 hours of the HCG injection. IUI is done prior to ovulation period so that the sperms can be inserted into uterus and wait for eggs. IUI process does not take too much of time, in fact the whole procedure gets finished in few minutes.

You will not have any pain because of IUI. Chances are there that you can experience cramping before and after the procedure, same that you felt at the time of your period. One discomfort that normally occurs is speculum discomfort.

When the process of IUI gets over you are required to lay straight on the table for the period of 20 to 30 minutes.

After this you are relieved. Mostly doctors suggest the person to take proper rest after going home, which is very good for you. If you are worried that semen will leak out and you have to be on bed for whole day because of this, then you may relax as there is no chance of semen coming out, reason for this is that your cervix is closed completely, so there is no chance of leaking.

Some doctors suggest that you can have an intercourse following intrauterine insemination. If the sperm count of your husband is good then you can have a period of intercourse every next day of your fertility. By this you can increase the chances of conception.

Taking the decision to take up the procedure of intrauterine insemination is a very big thing. It is a very big step in your journey to gain or increase fertility. You should learn about the symptoms of IUI of pregnancy. When you have undergone IUI procedure, choosing the time of pregnancy test is very important. It does not matter whether you are showing symptoms of pregnancy or not, you should go for the tests after two weeks. You are required to wait for such a long time because in some situations the implantation may take a week.
