With in vitro fertilization, the processes that normally occur in the woman's
fallopian tube are taking place in the laboratory. The eggs are taken from the
ovary, placed with sperm in a dish or a single sperm is injected into the egg
to achieve fertilization, and the resulting embryos are placed inside the
woman's uterine cavity by passing a catheter through the cervix. Embryo
freezing is also done if there are extra embryos after the transfer.

Infertility is a medical problem that can be treated. It involves a disease or
condition of the reproductive system, in either a male or female, which
inhibits the couple's ability to conceive after a year of unprotected
intercourse (six months for women over age 35) or to carry a pregnancy to
term.

In Vitro Fertilization (IVF): For patients with irreparably damaged fallopian
tubes, profound oligospermia, or failure to conceive after adequate attempts
of intrauterine inseminations, in vitro fertilization (IVF) has become the
treatment of choice. The technology involves incubating the oocytes and sperm
in the laboratory and allowing the resulting embryo(s) to develop for a number
of days prior to transferring them into the endometrial cavity.
