RMIA : Reproductive Medicine & Infertility Associates
Clinical medical research at RMIA examines oocyte (egg) development in PCOS, a
reproductive disorder of women characterized by anovulation, ovarian
hyperandrogenism and insulin resistance from hyperinsulinemia and also examines
how hormone interactions within the human follicle during IVF affects genetic
markers of oocyte function.
These clinical studies are complemented by additional basic science research
using nonhuman primate models of reproduction, including the prenatally
androgenized female rhesus monkey as a unique model for PCOS.

The eggs and sperm are mixed in the laboratory to allow fertilization. In cases
of male infertility, the embryologist can inject a single sperm directly into an
egg - this technique is called Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) - and is
used in cases of low sperm counts or when our pre IVF sperm testing suggests a
high chance of poor spontaneous fertilization. On average, 70 per cent of mature
eggs will fertilize. The embryos will be placed in an incubator where their
growth will be monitored.

In vitro fertilization is a very successful treatment option for infertility
but, like most infertility therapies, more than one treatment may be required
before a pregnancy is achieved. Naturally, many couples are anxious about the
costs without the guarantee of a successful outcome. The Vested Interest Program
was created to give our patients every opportunity to succeed with IVF without
the financial risk that normally accompanies multiple treatments. You will have
peace of mind during treatment knowing that the costs are fixed and you are free
to pursue the treatment you need to help you have a baby.
