Acupuncture Infertility IVF
A German study of 160 women undergoing IVF found that the women who had
acupuncture before and after the embryo transfer had a significantly higher
pregnancy rate - 42.5% compared to 26.3% of the women who did not have
acupuncture.
Another study by Cornell University, published in the December 2002 issue of
Fertility and Sterility, reported, " The peripheral impact of acupuncture in
improving uterine artery blood flow and hence endometrial thickness .....
provides encouraging data regarding its potential positive effect on
implantation." the study concluded, "Because acupuncture is nontoxic and
relatively affordable, its indications as an adjunct in assisted reproduction or
as an alternative for women who are intolerant,
ineligible, or contraindicated for conventional hormone induction of ovulation
deserves serious research and exploration."

In a natural menstrual cycle, women usually develop and release a single egg in
a month. During an IVF cycle, follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and
gonadotropic releasing hormone agonist (GnRHa) are used to stimulate your
ovaries in order to develop several follicles that contain eggs. Human chorionic
gonadotropin (HCG) is given to trigger the final maturation of the eggs. The
timing of this injection is controlled, so that the eggs can be retrieved before
they are spontaneously released.
During the IVF treatment cycle, vaginal ultrasounds are performed in order to
monitor the growth and development of the follicles, and to identify any
problems, such as
ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS). Ultrasound of the ovaries helps the
doctor count and measure each developing follicle.
Blood tests are also done to monitor your hormone levels throughout the cycle.
As the follicles develop, they produce increasing amounts of estrogen. Blood
tests are done to determine the level of this estrogen in the patient’s blood.
In general, the higher the estrogen level, the more follicles are developing.
The results of ultrasounds and estrogen blood tests are used to adjust the
amount of medications given during the treatment cycle.
