The Center for Reproductive Health of Oklahoma City

IVF or In Vitro Fertilization, involves combining eggs and sperm outside the body in a laboratory. Once an embryo or embryos form, they are then placed in the uterus. IVF is a highly complex procedure but since its introduction in the U.S. in 1981, IVF and other similar techniques have resulted in more than 200,000 babies.

Before the egg retrieval process begins, the female will be given injections of a medication that allows the developing eggs to begin ovulation. Timing is important; the eggs must be retrieved just before they emerge from the follicles in the ovaries. If the eggs are taken out too early or too late, they won't develop normally. Tests and Ultrasounds are used to be sure the eggs are at the right stage of development before retrieving them.

During the IVF procedure, the staff will locate follicles in the ovary with ultrasound and remove the eggs with a hollow needle. The procedure is relatively quick and in most cases takes less than an hour to complete.

Once the retrieval has been completed, the female's eggs will be mixed in the laboratory with the male partner's sperm. The fertilized eggs are kept in our fertility practice under observation to ensure optimal growth. Soon the embryo reaches a critical blastocyst stage in which it is time to transfer back into the female's uterus. More than one embryo can be transferred into the uterus. This procedure is completed in the fertility offices and is generally quicker than the retrieval of the eggs.

Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility

OU Physicians Reproductive Health focuses exclusively on the treatment of infertility and reproductive endocrine problems. Both of our specialists have extensive expertise and are fellowship trained in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility. Our objective is to identify all causes of infertility and then to establish a treatment plan to help patients achieve their goal of pregnancy. After the first trimester of pregnancy, women return to their physician for obstetrical care.

Our experienced team of infertility physicians includes Karl Hansen, M.D., Ph.D., and LaTasha Craig, M.D., both fellowship-trained in reproductive endocrinology and infertility. OU Physicians Reproductive Health IVF program was established in 2006, providing the most advanced treatment conveniently located in the rapidly growing OU Medical Center. In addition to our IVF laboratory, we also offer full-service andrology and endocrine laboratory on-site.

OU Physicians Reproductive Health is pleased to announce the availability of the IntegraMed® Shared Risk® Refund Program. For about the price of two IVF cycles, the Shared Risk Refund program allows a patient to prepay for up to three IVF cycles and three frozen embryo transfers, with a refund of at least 70% should a patient decide to discontinue treatment, or in the event that the patient does not take a baby home from the hospital.

Dr. Reshef's

I created this Web site to disseminate information about my sub-specialty of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility and to allow patients and non-patients to communicate with me. Your comments, whether a patient, non-patient, future patient, or a relative thereof, are welcome. I will attempt to respond to your comments or questions promptly. You can learn about my professional background (see "About" and "Bio"); browse an update of recent scientific articles (see "News"); and read about topics of interest (see "Educate me!"). As a gynecologist, I see patients for routine examinations as well as common gynecological problems (e.g. abnormal bleeding, infections, pelvic pain, endometriosis, contraception). As a Reproductive Endocrinologist, I help patients with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), puberty or menopause issues (including hormone replacement therapy), abnormal ovulation, birth defects of the vagina or uterus, abnormal sexual development, hirsutism (excess hair), and menstrual disorders. As an infertility specialist, I diagnose the causes of infertility and provide simple and complex treatments such as education, artificial insemination with husband or donor sperm, in vitro fertilization (IVF), ovulation induction with oral and injectable medications (including clomiphene, letrozole, metformin, gonadotropins), reproductive surgery (including laparoscopy with laser, hysteroscopy, tubal reversal, myomectomy), and treatment of recurrent miscarriages. Besides being a Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility Specialist in private practice, I serve as the Medical Director of Bennett Fertility Institute in Oklahoma City, where assisted reproductive technology procedures such as IVF, intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), assisted hatching (AH) and embryo and sperm freezing are performed.

I graduated from medical school in 1984 (see Bio). After finishing an Obstetrics and Gynecology residency in 1988, I took a fellowship in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility. In 1990, I joined the faculty at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center (OUHSC) and became the director of the Assisted Reproductive Technology there. In 1995, I moved my practice to the private sector, to Integris Baptist Medical Center, where I became the medical director of the Bennett Fertility Institute. I still maintain an appointment at OUHSC as a Clinical Associate Professor, although most of my time is spent in direct patient care in my private practice. I am board-certified in both general Obstetrics and Gynecology and in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility.

My background is slightly different than most. I grew up in Israel and immigrated to the United States in 1976. I did 3 years of military service and started college 4 years later than my peers. I had the opportunity to travel extensively prior to college, and to work as a sheet metal worker, fruit picker, waiter, orderly, and a gardener and pool cleaner before practicing medicine. Clearly, I gave myself enough time to select a suitable career and also to learn what not to take for granted.
