Infertility and IVF Center
Traditionally, human infertility has been referred to as the "woman's problem"
ignoring the male contribution. More recent studies have revealed that in a
population of infertile couples about 40% is due to male factors, 40% is due to
female factors and the other 20% are due to female and male factors together.
However, to evaluate the
reproductive potential of a couple the physician must see the couple as a unit.
To illustrate this point further, a man with moderate infertility may never need
medical
attention if the spouse displays normal or above average fertility.
Over the past decade, knowledge and technological advances have increased the
variety and availability of procedures designed to assist infertile couples in
achieving
pregnancy. The original and most often used infertility therapy is In Vitro
Fertilization (IVF), which, along with other techniques, has substantially
increased the likelihood of couples to have babies. The Infertility & IVF Center
offers all of the advanced reproductive technologies available worldwide. Some
of these techniques will be briefly explained below.
The information generated from the quantitative and functional tests performed
at the Infertility & IVF Center is utilized by our staff to implement an
individualized infertility
treatment. The objective of our treatment is to help you and your partner
achieve pregnancy. Depending on the severity of the male factor infertility and
on the medical history of your partner we may suggest you utilize the least
invasive modalities for infertility such as intrauterine inseminations (IUI), or
In-Vitro Fertilization if the counts of motile sperm are such that a series of
IUIs may not be effective. Usually these treatments require that the male
partner should be able to provide at least two (for IVF) or five (for IUI)
million motile sperm. If the sperm counts are below the above limits, there is
still the option for sperm banking to overcome this problem. Donor semen is also
available.
IVF-ET was originally developed to treat women with tubal factor infertility.
However, it is used today to treat infertility problems due to adhesions,
endometriosis, sperm
antibodies, moderate male factor, failed GIFT cycles and unexplained
infertility. Women with at least one normal tube may wish to use GIFT or ZIFT
which provide a higher success rate.
