SCSA Diagnostics
Dr. Donald P. Evenson, Ph.D., HCLD is a Distinguished Professor of Biochemistry
at South Dakota State University and President and Director of SCSAŽ
Diagnostics, Inc. a private corporation that is solely dedicated to using the
SCSAŽ test to determine the relationship between infertility and DNA
fragmentation in sperm. Dr. Evenson invented and developed the SCSAŽ test and
has over 20 years experience measuring tens of thousands of animal and human
sperm samples. Therefore, Dr. Evenson is likely the most knowledgeable and
experienced person in the world to conduct, analyze and interpret this complex
assay.
After studying the structure of viral chromosomes for two years as a staff
scientist at the Union Carbide Research Institute in Tarrytown, NY, Dr. Evenson
accepted a joint
faculty appointment at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and the
Cornell Graduate School for Medical Sciences in New York City where for eleven
years he used electron microscopy to study the structure of cancer virus and
human sperm chromosomes. During the last five years of his tenure in New York,
Dr. Evenson was appointed to the Flow Cytometry Laboratory at Memorial Sloan
Kettering, which was one of the few laboratories credited with the invention of
the flow cytometer in the late 1960's. Dr. Evenson initially used this
sophisticated, laser-driven and computer-interfaced instrument in studying the
effects of chemotherapy agents on mammalian chromosomes.
Dr. Evenson and his colleagues at Memorial Sloan Kettering invented the Sperm
Chromatin Structure Assay (SCSAŽ) test. Their first paper on the potential power
of the SCSAŽ test for human and animal fertility studies was published in the
prestigious journal Science (December 5, 1980) with green (fertile) and red
(infertile) acridine orange-stained sperm pictured on the cover. Since the
publication of this first study, the SCSAŽ test has been proven time and again
to be one of the most powerful assays used in fertility and toxicology studies.
Dr. Evenson was awarded a U.S. Patent for the SCSAŽ test for infertility
assessment.
