Maine Center for Reproductive Health
In Vitro Fertilization brings surgically recovered eggs together with sperm in
the laboratory. The laboratory at Maine Center for Reproductive Health is
supervised by our highly skilled embryologists. Our patients benefit from the
individual and personalized attention given to each IVF patient by our entire
staff. The IVF Coordinator works closely with each patient or couple to guide
them through this complicated process.
This surgical procedure is performed in our operating room under anesthesia by
our highly skilled team led by Dr. Beth Hartog. Using ultrasound, a probe
equipped with a needle guide is inserted into the vagina. Dr. Hartog guides the
probe from follicle to follicle, carefully removing fluid and eggs from each,
until all follicles have been emptied. After the eggs are collected they are
immediately transferred to the IVF lab where the embryologist and lab staff will
begin identifying the eggs and prepare for insemination.
After egg retrieval and sperm collection have been completed, the eggs and sperm
are put together in the lab (insemination). Fertilization takes place and
ultimately, cell division. This process takes place in our controlled incubators
under the watchful attention of our embryology staff. Our incubators are
specially equipped to regulate gases, temperature and humidity for best results.
Dr. Hartog performs the transfer several days after retrieval. Using a speculum,
she will insert a small catheter containing the embryos through the cervix into
the uterus
where they will be deposited. Ultrasound will be used to ensure the embryos are
deposited in the desired location.
Although this process is physically easy for the patient, it can be emotionally
stressful. Your partner can join you for support. We’ll ask you to rest quietly
after the transfer is complete.
The pregnancy test is done 15 days after the retrieval. If the pregnancy test is
positive, another test will be performed one week later. An ultrasound will then
be scheduled at the appropriate time depending on pregnancy hormone levels.
