Welcome to Yale Fertility Center
As the first In Vitro Fertilization Program in the Northeast, the Yale In Vitro
Fertilization Program, referred to as Yale IVF, has become a recognized leader
in the field of assisted reproductive technology. Yale IVF is associated with
one of the finest medical schools and hospitals in the country.
The program started in 1982, and in 1983, the first Yale IVF baby was born to a
couple who shared in our role as forerunners in the evolving field of assisted
reproductive technology. The program works with infertile couples offering
support, information, and counseling as well as the latest technological
procedures and advanced treatment. We strive to make the IVF experience as
rewarding and positive as possible.
The program also provides the amenities of a private practice while ensuring
access to academic expertise and technological breakthroughs. We realize the
process of resolving infertility can be difficult, therefore, our program makes
every effort to minimize any confusion or frustration couples may be
experiencing by thoroughly discussing all procedures and aspects of care.
In vitro fertilization (IVF) involves fertilization outside the body in an
artificial environment. This procedure was first used for infertility in humans
in 1977 at Bourne Hall in Cambridge, England. To date, thousands of babies have
been delivered worldwide as a result of IVF treatment. Over the years, the
procedures to achieve IVF pregnancy have become more successful and affordable.
Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) is a relatively new micromanipulation
technique developed to help achieve fertilization for couples with severe male
factor infertility or couples who have had failure to fertilize in a previous in
vitro fertilization attempt. The technique involves very precise maneuvers to
pick up a single live sperm and inject it directly into the center of a human
egg. The procedure overcomes many of the barriers to fertilization and allows
couples with little hope to achieve a successful pregnancy. At Yale the ICSI
procedure was first used in 1994 and the first successful birth was achieved in
1995.

While infertility may appear to be the core problem, it is actually the
manifestation of a deeper underlying imbalance. Through our approach of creating
a healthy and fertile body, we correct the imbalance and leave it to the body to
do what it was created to do: live in vitality and be fertile. Our overall goal
is to prepare the body for conception and pregnancy.
All patients seeking reproductive assistance receive 2-3 treatments monthly
until pregnant. No treatment is required during the week of your menstrual
cycle.Acupuncture treatments for Infertility are enjoyable, and relaxing. IVF is
a time sensitive procedure that requires that you have the ability to contact
me. You will be given a cell phone number to call me to coordinate your
acupuncture treatments with IVF. Patients combining acupuncture with Assisted
Reproductive Therapy (IVF…) will receive 2-3 treatments monthly until retrieval.
On the day of your transfer you MUST HAVE 2 TREATMENTS immediately before and
immediately after the eggs are placed back into the uterus. Researchers in
Adelaide have found that giving acupuncture to IVF patients can substantially
increase pregnancy rates.

Breakthrough Egg Freezing Technology
As women, we lead rich and demanding lives - obtaining advanced degrees,
pursuing successful careers, and taking better care of ourselves. We have an
astounding number of opportunities and as a result, many of us choose to start
our families later than our mothers and grandmothers.
But in waiting longer to have children, many women face the real challenge of
having successful, healthy pregnancies later in life. While we have made great
strides in other areas, our fertility is still limited by basic biology – the
'biological clock' generally stops ticking in our late 30’s or early 40’s. Our
opportunities are endless, but our egg supply and quality are not.
Freezing eggs offers women planning to have children after the age of 35 the
opportunity to effectively slow down their biological clocks. Extend Fertility’s
service gives women the unprecedented chance to store their eggs during their
reproductive prime for use when they wish to start or expand their families.
At birth, all females have about 1 million eggs. By puberty, a woman’s egg
reserve has declined by 50% and each month thereafter, she will lose an
additional 750 eggs. Beginning in a woman’s 20’s, the eggs not only begin to
diminish in quantity, but also in quality. Significant deterioration occurs
after the age of 35. The end result is that as a woman ages, it becomes
increasingly difficult, and eventually impossible for her to conceive a healthy
baby naturally due to the age of her eggs.
According to the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM), a woman over
the age of 40 has only a 5 percent chance or less of becoming pregnant naturally
in any one month. Furthermore, the risk of chromosomal abnormalities in newborns
increases with the age of the woman's egg, growing to 1 in 66 at age 40 versus 1
in 385 at age 30. The risk of Down Syndrome in particular increases from 1 in
1,000 at age 20, to 1 in 100 at age 40 according to the CDC.
