Family Beginnings
We strive to provide the most advanced infertility care available. We offer the
full range of therapies in an appropriate fashion to minimize patient cost and
stress while
maximizing pregnancy out comes. We understand that each couples is unique in
their medical history and personal desires. We tailor our treatments to meet
those needs. Our Physician is always available via pager to address our
patient’s concerns. We understand what a wonderful gift God gives us with
children and how important this part of our life is.
Our practice specializes in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility. We are
well versed in the most state of the art treatments and technologies. Our
patient education pages, written by Dr. Donahue, cover many aspects of
reproductive health and infertility. One of our main goals is patient education.
We are the only practice in central Indiana to offer IVF in an office-based
setting where comfort, safety, convenience, and exceptional pregnancy rates are
obtained.
Additionally, we offer the greatest value in ART locally. Our egg donation
program is also one of the most cost effective for patients that require donor
eggs to conceive.
Our IVF procedure fee (includes surgeon fee, facility fee for retrieval and
transfer, sperm prep, embryo culture and transfer) is only $4000, roughly one
half of what
hospital-based programs charge. Additional charges include medicines, blood work
and ultrasounds, and ICSI, assisted hatching and embryo cryopreservation, as
needed. While most of our patients never need such advanced therapy, it is
reassuring to know it is available at a reasonable price. Our patients recognize
the value and commitment we offer them.
We perform male testing at our North Side Indianapolis Location. 40 % of couples
experiencing infertility have a male component to the infertility problem, so it
is important to have the testing done early in the evaluation. It is not
uncommon for men to feel a little uneasy about testing. Men generally do not
have as much contact with physicians for a number of reasons making it difficult
to get the testing done. A home- based test may be appealing to many men. There
are home diagnostic tests available which can detect the presence of sperm (i.e.
FertilMARQ) and the presence of motile sperm (i.e. Fertell) above a certain
concentration. An official semen analysis, however, is much better. The semen
analysis will show the total number of sperm and motility, the presence of white
blood cells (a sign of infection), agglutination (possible anti-sperm
antibodies) and sperm morphology (i.e. abnormalities of the head, mid-piece or
tail) and sperm viability at 24 hours. We feel this gives the patient much
better information about their fertility than any home test and is thus a much
greater value. The cost is $150. The semen analysis is interpreted by a CAP
(College of American Pathologists) approved laboratory and Physician. Our web
site has a significant number of pages devoted to male factors, so the patient
can feel secure about the quality of information.

The Center for Reproductive Biology of Indiana
In vitro fertilization or fertilization "in glass" is a treatment for
infertility due to a variety of diagnoses including, but not limited to,
ovulatory dysfunction, tubal blockage,
endometriosis or low sperm count. Eggs and sperm are placed together in a
nutrient- rich medium droplet and are kept in an incubator that controls
temperature, humidity,
carbon dioxide and oxygen concentrations to closely mimic the environment of the
Fallopian tube, the organ in which fertilization normally occurs.
In vitro fertilization is only one assisted reproductive technique that may be
recommended to treat infertility. Before any treatment occurs, a couple should
have a multi-step diagnostic workup to determine which infertility treatment is
most likely to be effective.
Ovarian Stimulation. Typically, your physician will prescribe a regime of
medications that are taken daily for a period of 10-12 days to stimulate your
ovaries to produce more eggs than the single egg you normally produce without
medications. This treatment phase is called controlled ovarian stimulation and
requires frequent monitoring of hormonal blood levels as well as vaginal
ultrasounds to track follicular growth. From these tests, your physician will
know when you are ready for the egg retrieval. Thirty-six hours before your egg
retrieval is scheduled, you will take a medication to induce the final
"ripening" of your eggs.
Ultrasound-guided Egg Retrieval. Egg retrieval is an outpatient surgical
procedure. You will receive conscious sedation for this procedure. You may have
your partner or other support person with you for the egg retrieval. Your
physician will insert an aspiration needle through the vaginal wall to reach the
ovaries. Your physician will "retrieve" the eggs from your ovaries into a
sterile tube that is then passed to the embryologist, who identifies and washes
each egg. The egg retrieval is normally completed within 20-40 minutes. The
embryologist quickly transfers each egg to a nutrient-rich growth medium. You
will typically be discharged after two to three hours' rest in recovery.
