  Houston Fertility Institute

One of the best-known treatments for infertility is in vitro fertilization, or IVF. Our Texas fertility clinics often uses IVF because it is highly effective for both female and male factor infertility. It offers the best chance of pregnancy per cycle, but is also the most expensive form of treatment. As a result, IVF at our clinics in Tomball and Houston are often utilized only after trying more conservative treatments. The in vitro fertilization procedure at Houston Fertility Institute involves hormone injections to stimulate ovaries to mature eggs, which are then retrieved through aspiration. Fertilization of the eggs takes place in our IVF laboratory in Tomball or Houston. The resulting embryos are nourished in an incubator and, at a predetermined stage of development, transferred into the uterus to continue normal fetal development. For experienced in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment in the Houston, Texas, area, you can trust the doctors and staff of Houston Fertility Institute.

Intrauterine insemination (IUI) is one of a number of infertility treatments available at Houston Fertility Institute. Intrauterine insemination or IUI is a basic step towards fertility treatments. It is also called artificial insemination. This fertility treatment can be done using your husband or partner's sperm or sperm from a donor. Following intercourse, only a small proportion of the sperm ascend the female genital tract. The goal of IUI is to increase the quantity of sperm into the uterus and thereby facilitate fertilization. For IUI the sperm are first washed and placed into a small volume of sterile medium and are then injected directly into the uterus via a thin soft catheter. The patient is able to resume normal activity immediately following the IUI procedure.

Severe male factor infertility, once an impenetrable barrier to parenthood, has virtually ceased to exist. ICSI involves the insertion of a single sperm directly into a mature egg obtained from the ovary of a woman undergoing in vitro fertilization. Often, this results in fertilization and the development of a normal embryo. The babies born after ICSI are just as healthy as babies conceived spontaneously.

Houston IVF

With in vitro fertilization (IVF), the eggs are collected by guiding a needle through the vaginal wall with ultrasound. No abdominal incisions are needed to collect the eggs or transfer the embryos into the uterus.

However, gamete intrafallopian transfer (GIFT) and zygote or tubal embryo transfer (ZIFT or TET) usually require the woman to have a laparoscopy. Since our program has very high IVF pregnancy rates, rates that are higher than the GIFT pregnancy rates of most programs, we do not recommend GIFT since it requires a surgery (the laparoscopy).

These treatments are useful in women who have anatomical problems with their cervix or uterus which make conventional IVF difficult (transferring the embryos through the cervix) or in other unusual circumstances. Since ZIFT or TET require two separate procedures in the operating room, the cost of these treatments is higher than IVF.

With in vitro fertilization, the processes that normally occur in the woman's fallopian tube are taking place in the laboratory. The eggs are taken from the ovary, placed with the man's sperm in a dish or tube in the lab to achieve fertilization, and the resulting embryos are placed inside the woman's uterine cavity by passing a catheter through the cervix. Embryo freezing is also done if there are extra embryos after the transfer.

Infertility can be the result of a number of factors such as mechanical, hormonal, and functional problems. In addition to addressing the medical causes of infertility, Dr. Grunert believes that an integral part of his practice is to treat each patient as an individual, addressing the physical and psychological toll that the infertile couple faces. Dr. Grunert appreciates the unique character and quality of each individual and strives to treat each patient as such. Working closely with the patient/couple, he will tailor a personalized treatment plan in order to meet each patient's objectives.

Dedicated to knowing each patient's needs and expectations, Dr. George M. Grunert believes in seeing each patient at every visit, something that is not found in most infertility practices today. He and his staff believe that this one-on-one relationship is an integral part of his success in helping patients reach their goals. His practice is less contrived and less complicated than many encountered in the infertility field.

Dr. Grunert graduated from Rice University in Houston, received his MD degree from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, and completed post-graduate training in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Naval Regional Medical Center (NRMC) in Oakland, California. He received Fellowship training in Reproductive Endocrinology at NRMC, Oakland, and at the University of California at San Francisco. He returned to Houston in 1981 to begin the private practice of gynecology, infertility and reproductive endocrinology.

In 1986, Dr. Grunert founded the Laboratory for Assisted Reproductive Technology at the Obstetrical and Gynecological Associates and the Woman's Hospital of Texas. Since its inception Dr. Grunert has served as the Medical Director. This remains the oldest ongoing in-vitro fertilization (IVF) program in Houston. It was the first program in the Southwest to be certified by the Society of Assisted Reproductive Technology (SART). The Laboratory is constantly involved in research to remain at the top of the field and to be able to offer the latest technology advancements to the patient.
