Infertility is often very emotionally draining for patients. Not only are they faced with the news that conceiving a child is only possible through medical treatment, they are also overwhelmed with a lot of new information. New medical terminology and recommendations for treatments and tests that are unfamiliar can be very intimidating for the newly diagnosed couple. The specialists at the Advanced for Infertility and Reproductive Medicine believe in creating a one on one relationship with patients. We have found that the most successful outcomes occur when the patient is well-informed and can play an active role in determining their infertility treatment. We value this interactive warm and ethical relationship with each patient in an environment where questions are welcome and encouraged.

The broad categories for causes of infertility are inability to ovulate (failure to release an egg from the ovary), or poor egg quality (due to aging or other genetic factors), tubal disease (where fallopian tubes that carry the egg from the uterus to the uterus are damaged), poor development of the egg and the early fertilized embryo due to a short or poor luteal support (luteal phase defect), endometriosis (a condition where tissue that normally lines the inside the uterus is found outside the uterus within the abdomen), and abnormal sperm numbers and/or function (male factor). Infertility can also be totally unexplained.

Each of these categories can be the result of several medical conditions. In addition, a woman may have no difficulty conceiving but may repeatedly miscarry her pregnancies (recurrent miscarriage). This can be even more stressful than infertility. Genetic abnormalities can also cause infertility and /or recurrent miscarriage. Genetic abnormalities may affect reproductive potential without causing any other visible abnormality

Reproductive Health Specialists

Infertility is defined as the inability to conceive within one year or within six months if you're over age 35.

If this is you, don't get discouraged. Approximately one in ten couples will experience difficulty conceiving due to infertility. The sooner you seek help, the sooner you can realize your goals. There are many treatment options that can help you achieve your dream of having a baby - in the last seven years, there was a 120 percent increase in the number of births using assisted reproductive technology, and the numbers are increasing every day.

As an independent fertility center, RHS has raised standards in infertility care throughout the nation by providing all of the medical resources required for treatment. By incorporating standard clinical services with a state-of-the-art, on-premise operating room, with accredited embryology laboratory and ultrasound departments, RHS offers patients comfort and convenience knowing that RHS' specifically trained staff can guide them through all their treatments and procedures at one location.

To remain up-to-date on new developments in the field, the RHS staff regularly attends national medical conferences as well as biannual, off-site retreats. Additionally, the doctors organize daily "fertility team" meetings for the staff to review lab results of all active patients. These meetings focus on finding the best possible treatment for each patient while familiarizing the staff with their status, thus affording each patient the full benefit of the fertility team's expertise, knowledge and care.

Pittsburgh Fortune Acupuncture

Approximately three to six months prior to the IVF procedure, it is recommended that the patient receive acupuncture and herbal treatments to regulate the body’s functions and make IVF more successful. It is important to solve any issues regarding menstruation during this time such as irregular menstruation, amenorrhea (no menstruation), dysmenorrhea (painful menstruation), endometriosis, uterine myomas and heavy uterine bleeding. Sometimes after just these three months, the patient regains a normal menstrual cycle and is able to become pregnant naturally.

Acupuncture and Chinese medicinals help to improve ovarian function, allowing for development of better quality eggs and strong, healthy embryos. Chinese medicine can also regulate estrogen and progesterone levels, thereby thickening the lining of the uterus. Research indicates increased blood flow to the uterus can help promote follicular development and also implantation of the embryo. Many patients using IVF alone are only able to produce a few follicles. Based on clinical experience, we estimate that Chinese medicine can help the ovaries at least double the number of follicles as well as significantly enhance the embryo’s quality and quantity.

Approximately half of chemical pregnancies miscarry. Many patients using IVF drugs experience side effects and high levels of stress associated with trying to get pregnant. Chinese medicine is extremely helpful in reducing stress and alleviating side effects, which helps the patient be calmer and more at ease. Relaxing the patient helps prevent the uterus from contracting, thereby improving the implantation process and preventing miscarriage.
