Fertility Center
Our success rate is enviable, as evidenced by the trust placed in us by more
than 200 referring physicians. In fact, our "take home baby rates" for assisted
reproductive
techniques, like IVF, have exceeded the national average for over 10 years. The
Fertility Center of Maryland is an active member of the IVF Registry and of the
Society of Assisted Reproductive Technologies.
The indications for advanced reproductive techniques have been extended to
include almost every infertility problem: endometriosis, tubal factor, DES
exposure, abnormal
sperm counts, and sperm antibodies are some of the most common indications.
Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) is performed when the sperm count or
motility is inadequate for IVF. ICSI can also be done with sperm removed
directly from the testes.
In a normal menstrual cycle only one egg is ovulated. To increase the chance for
success, we attempt to gather more than one egg (oocyte). This is done by
stimulating the ovary with medications. Most of these medications have to be
given by daily injection. Careful monitoring is required for ovulation induction
to be successful. The egg is inside a small fluid-filled structure called a
follicle. As the eggs mature, more fluid gathers in the follicle and the blood
estrogen level rises. By using ultrasound to measure the follicle size and blood
estrogen levels, it is possible to accurately judge the proper time for egg
retrieval. Blood is usually drawn every morning or every other morning efore 9
a.m. for about 14 days. Ultrasounds are done for 5- 7 days starting around cycle
day 8. For your convenience, our office opens at 7 a.m. on weekdays and 7:30
a.m. on weekends.
If a couple has been trying to achieve pregnancy for over 1 year it is time to
consult our specialists who exclusively treat couples with infertility. Since
infertility can be age related, patients 35 years of age and older should see us
after failure to conceive for 6 months.
Embryo transfer is a process by which we place the fertilized egg (embryo) into
the uterus. The procedure takes 5 minutes and does not require anesthesia or
medication.
A small catheter with the embryos in a small amount of fluid is inserted through
the cervix into the uterus. Natural progesterone injections or suppositories
will be given to support the attachment and growth of the embryo. Usually the
embryo transfers are done three days after retrieval. In some cases, we wait for
5- 6 days and do a
blastocyst transfer. Blastocysts are advanced embryos. The main difference
between a day 3 transfer and a blastocyst transfer is that only 30% of good
quality embryos
become blastocysts. Doing a day 3 transfer gives the patient the opportunity to
have more embryos to freeze to improve the overall chances to achieve a
pregnancy from
one egg retrieval.

Acupuncture treatment is an excellent way to smooth this transition into the
longer days and increased activity of the season. It can aid in the flexibility
we all need to
organize new projects and ideas, as well as the anxiety that may accompany the
need to get it all done NOW.
Consider finally taking the step towards your picture of a more well-rounded
experience of health and well-being. Make this the year you finally address
those spring time allergies, chronic back pain, premenstrual and menopausal
symptoms. Or are you planning a birth of your own in nine months? Set aside time
to use acupuncture treatment to support you around fertility and hormonal
concerns.
Don’t allow yourself to be stuck during this time of movement and growth. It is
a great season to address fatigue linked to any number of things including
anemia,
fibromyalgia, or emotional concerns. Allow yourself the freedom to grow and
change in harmony with the seasons with the support of acupuncture and herbal
treatment.
Who knows what possibilities are in store for you?

When people ask me the question "What is Acupuncture good for?", I always reply
without hesitation, "It is great for treatment of menstrual disorders". In my 18
years of
practice as a Doctor of Oriental Medicine, I have seen amazing clinical results
in the treatment of women's disorders, such as amenorrhea, dysmenorrhea,
menorrhagia,
menopausal syndrome and infertility.
Recently, the use of Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine combined with conventional
medical treatment of infertility has gained popularity. Some couples who are
meeting
challenges in an effort to achieve pregnancy are exploring every treatment
option available. With the advent of new acupuncture research for the treatment
of infertility,
couples are finding that Acupuncture offers new ways to increase their chances
of getting pregnant.
Chinese Medicine, which is over 2,000 years old, spoke about infertility, and
described in detail a means to correct or remedy functional problems leading to
infertility. Traditionally, the practice of medicine in China's culture was more
preventative than reactive as is in most western cultures. It is said in the
Yellow Emperor's Classic of Internal Medicine, "to administer medicines to those
who have already become ill, is likened to a man who tries to dig a well after
he has become thirsty". In other words, one could say that it is easier to
remedy a problem before it exists, instead of waiting till the problem is
already ingrained before beginning treatment.
Although it is a good thing that couples needing medical assistance are helped
by using Chinese Medicine, it would be more beneficial if they were to seek
Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine earlier in their journey. There is another old
saying once coined by a wise sage that succinctly outlines my point, "cultivate
the soil before planting the seed." Analogously, we'll say that the woman refers
to "the soil". A practitioner of Chinese Medicine does a comprehensive
assessment for women experiencing difficulty with their menstrual cycle, or with
getting pregnant. They may find some energetic, or functional imbalances in
which case they would initiate treatment. By doing this, they can feasibly
prevent having to undergo more invasive treatments.
