California Vasectomy & Reversal Center
Vasectomy is the most common form of surgical sterilization performed in the United States.Approximately 600,000 vasectomies are performed annually. It is a procedure done to surgically sterilize the male. Once a vasectomy has been successfully completed and the semen has been confirmed to be absent of any sperm, then the couple can enjoy intercourse without the fear of having an unwanted pregnancy. Vasectomy is 99.9% successful.
Vasectomy is usually performed in the doctor's office using a local anesthetic. Only in rare instances will the vasectomy have to be performed in the operating room.
Vasectomy is performed through a small opening in the scrotal skin. The skin is anesthetized with a local anesthetic similar to when you have a dental procedure. The vas deferens, the tube carrying sperm from the testicle to the penis, is isolated. The vas deferens is tied usually in two locations and a small segment of thevas deferens is cut out. The small opening in the scrotum is then closed. The entire procedure takes less than 20 minutes.
There are many different options for male contraception, however, none of them are as reliable as a vasectomy. Unfortunately, a reliable male contraceptive pill is notavailable. A couple can choose to use condoms. These come in various sizes and brands. Condoms offer the additional advantage of preventing transmission of sexually transmitted diseases. Condoms can break and they must be applied every time prior to intercourse. Many men report decreased satisfaction during sexual intercourse when they wear a condom. Also, care must be taken not to use a latex condom in couples who have latex allergies.
The "withdrawal" method/coitus interruptus or the timing method are other techniques used to prevent pregnancy. These techniques are not reliable and are associated with unacceptable pregnancy rates. Female contraception includes birth control pills, spermicides, sponges, intra-uterine devices, implantable hormone pellets, and tubal ligation. Birth control pills and implantable hormone pellets are reliable forms of contraception but increase the woman's risk of multiple medical problems such blood clots and cancer. Spermicides and sponges can be irritating to both the male and female partners. Intra-uterine devices can migrate out of position and require a small office procedure to place them by a physician. Tubal ligation is an operation that must be done under general anesthesia and requires abdominal surgery.

During the TVA, the female patient will lie on an examination table similar to that used for performing a Pap smear. An intravenous (IV) line will be placed in the patient’s arm by an anesthesiologist. This site will be used to administer the medications during the procedure. Prior to the TVA, a speculum is placed in the vagina so that it may be cleaned using sterile solutions that do not harm eggs.
The egg retrieval procedure utilizes a vaginal ultrasound probe, which has a metal guide attached to it. The guide allows a hollow needle to be placed beside the probe. The tip of the needle is etched so that it is visible on the ultrasound monitor. The needle is attached to tubing that goes to a plastic tube and a gentle suction machine. The physician uses the vaginal ultrasound probe to visualize the ovaries and the follicles within them on the ultrasound monitor. Once the patient is anesthetized, the needle is pushed through the vaginal wall into one of the follicles within an ovary. As the tip of the needle penetrates the wall of the follicle, the suction machine is started. The fluid within the follicle is aspirated and flows to the plastic tube. The egg is usually loosely attached to the inner wall of the follicle and as the fluid within the follicle is withdrawn, the egg is aspirated into the tube. This tube is then given to the embryologist who examines each drop of the fluid through a microscope to look for an egg. It is common to have some follicles that do not contain eggs.
Therefore, the number of follicles may not equal the number of eggs found. The procedure is finished when all the follicles from both ovaries have been aspirated. A fresh semen specimen needs to be provided by the male partner on the day of egg retrieval.

Acupuncture in Palm Springs
One of Michael Boyer’s specialties is the treatment of infertility using acupuncture and herbs. He has a high success rate with women and men who have been trying to conceive naturally or through medical technology such as invitro-fertilization and other assisted fertility procedures.
Traditional Chinese medicine views the reproductive system as a network of channels and vessels which deliver Qi (energy) and blood to the internal organs keeping hormonal activity balanced and functioning normally. This network can become damaged by stress, poor diet and exercise habits and toxins in the environment, all of which can throw the body and it’s systems out of balance.
The reproductive process is so delicate that in some cases even a slight imbalance can throw the system off enough that it becomes difficult to conceive. Chinese medicine uses acupuncture and herbs along with diet and lifestyle changes to gently direct the whole body back into balance, thereby enabling conception to happen naturally.
Acupuncture is a proven method for increasing the odds of conception for couples going though assisted fertility. Recently there was a study that was published in western medical journals which showed that acupuncture can increase the odds of success during assisted fertility treatments by over 40%.
